  • Display of Driver's Cabin.

  • Sound effects.
  • Locomotive simulated: E444R of Italian State Railways.
  • Compilation of different journeys with capability of defining both train and route characteristics.
  • Keeping the score of the Operator's ability, thus competing with other operators.
  • Signals: possibility of creating a variety of signals, which can change aspect (e.g.. To stop a train at a station or at a protection signal). It is possible to change points.
  • The Route: it is possible to define curves, gradients, maximum permissible speed, wheel slip conditions alterable every 50 metres, repeater signal types, tunnels, speed restriction notices, , deceleration, stations (with capability of defining particulars).
  • Trains: setting of number of carriages, braking weight, amount of sand available in locomotive.
  • Each train has two documents which contain information on the route and on the train; the train schedule (which is a new requirement of the Italian State Railways and is to be extended to all the routes) and M3 (Slow down instructions).

    Minimum Computer Requirements

    250 MHz Processor.
    32 Mb of Ram.
    800x600 graphics resolution with High Colour.
    Sound Card.
    Windows 95, 98, 2000 or NT.
    Should the computer have lower specifications, the programme will run, but it's execution will be somewhat jerky. If the specs are too low, the sound effects will not function. The programme will not run if the screen resolution is below 800x600 and if the sound effects are not reproduced. Should the number of colours is 256, then the screen will not show the correct colour rendering. Naturally the higher the computer specifications, the better the animation. The programme takes up 6 Mbytes.

    Downloading the Programme

    The complete file holds the Programme, some short practice routes, details of train 11711 and train 3127 operating between Florence and Pisa..

    Downloading and installation instructions:
  • Download the file "Simtreno202in.exe".
  • Run the programme which will create the folder "treno2inst" which contains all installation files.
  • Open the folder and run the Set-up file following the instructions.
  • After installation run the programme by selecting "Avvio", "Programmi", "Simulatore treno 2".
  • You will need the "Activation Code" to run the complete programme as without this code, the programme will only run for 3 minutes.
    Download "Simtreno202_en.exe" (version 2.02)

    In order to obtain the "Activation Code" it is necessary to run the programme. The word "Attendere" (Please wait) will appear and after a short while the Driver's cab will appear overlaid by a grey window in which there is some text and a nine figure code called "Codice Programma" (Programme Code). This is the code you must send to the author together with your remittance which can be in cash. On receipt of these, the author will send you the Activation Code either by letter or by E-mail if you include your E-mail address. Keep this code carefully as you will need it every time you start the programme. The author's address is :

    Problems - Solutions - Corrections

    23/7/2000 - Version 2.02 - Problems and possible solutions.
  • In some rare cases, the programme does not run and an error message appears or may even start but locks itself after a few minutes. Should this happen download the file "ProblemiSoluzioni_en" and unzip it. A folder called "Note" will be created and will contain all necessary instructions.
  • Download the file "ProblemiSoluzioni_en.exe"

    List of problems encountered (these will be resolved in a future version);
  • When the number of carriages is changed, the start signal opens before the actual time of departure.
  • When changing the braking weight percentage, the new speed ceiling shown on the repeater signals is not calculated correctly.
  • Stopping the train at a station (with no signals) but where the train should stop to maintain the timetable: if the train is stopped at a point lying between 70 and 90 metres beyond the normal stopping point an error is created and when the train departs again, after a few metres the error shows up as stop ignored.
  • Cabin repeater signals: on start-up of the programme or if the programme is started from the menu when the train travels at a greater speed than that established by the white repeater with the letters "VR", the automatic brake and stop is activated.
  • There is a printing problem when printing more than one page of the train schedule.

    Programme downloading and installation instructions:

  • Download the file "Simedit100.exe".
  • Run the programme: a folder "Simedit100" containing all installation files will be created.
  • Open the folder and run Setup. Follow the instructions.
  • After successful installation select "Avvio", "Programmi", "Simulator Editor 100".
  • Should the user so desire, the routes created can be inserted in this web site, if so please send me the route by E-mail but follow the notes in chapter 7 of the Manual. This programme is free of charge.

    Download "Simedit100.exe"

    Problems encountered, solutions & explanations

    Train Documents

    In order to write the documents relative to speed restrictions and the "train schedule", it is necessary to use the forms automatically created by the programme when devising a new route.
    For example, if the route is called "Firenze_Pisa_12345", the speed restriction document will be called "Firenze_Pisa_12345_rallentamenti.txt" and the train schedule document will be called "Firenze_Pisa_12345_scheda_treno.txt".
    These files are created either in the folder called "scenari" or the folder called "scenari_per_simulatore".
    Important:
  • Use the files in folder "Scenari".
  • Check on the format of the documents from the pull-down menu "Documenti" then "Visualizza 3D". This operation also creates a copy in the folder "scenari_per_simulatore" thus completing all the files required by the simulator.
  • If possible, also check the format of the train documents and the route notes with the video set for large and small characters with resolutions of both 800x600 and 1024x768.

    Long Train Schedule i.e.. for a long route

    Should the Train Schedule take up more than one page, it is necessary to use the model called "scheda_treno_lunga.txt". To do this, copy the model into the file of the train schedule being created. The procedure is as follows (it is important to always work in the folder called "scenari"):
    - open the file "scheda_treno_lunga.txt";
    - select the whole contents and copy;
    - open the file of the train schedule being created;
    - erase all the text;
    - paste the copied text.
    As mentioned previously, there is a problem affecting the simulator when the train schedule is more than one page long. For the programme to function correctly the "Scheda treno lunga" (large train schedule) must consist of four pages, even though these may not be necessary to house the content. Unfortunately the model "scheda_treno_lunga.txt" has an error inasmuch as it consists of only 3 pages. In order to circumvent this error, it is necessary to add an extra page, by copying the third page (including the row of dots) and paste it to the end of the document, thus creating a fourth page. Alternatively download "Stl.exe" (self-extracting) which contains the correct four page model of "Scheda_treno_lunga.txt" and substitute this file for the old one in the folder "Scenari":
    Download "Stl.exe"

    User Routes sent for distribution

    Any routes created by the user and sent to me will be able to be downloaded and used if so desired by the creator. However please send only the files from the folder "Scenari" in the Route Creation Programme, i.e.. Only those with the extension ".txt" as these are of a reasonable size. Do not send the files from the folder "Scenari_per_simulatore" with extensions ".sim" or ".dat" as these are very large.
    When these new routes are downloaded, they will have a file called "sorgenti" but this file will not be visible. Those requiring that file will have to contact the author of the new route directly.

    Objects neither alterable nor erasable

    It may happen that some objects (signals, notices, speed restrictions etc.) may neither be moved nor erased. This happens when the objects have been placed in positions which are not multiples of 50: the following sequence should be avoided as it prevents any control on the final positioning of the object:
    - placing the cursor in a position which is not a multiple of 50
    - not pressing "enter"
    - inserting the new object
    Should the above occur, open the file, find the object and correct the position to a multiple of 50, alternatively cancel the whole line.

    Start Menu

    There is a spelling error "Simulatore editor 100" has been written as "Simlutore editor 100".

    Translator's note: All file names have been retained in Italian so that all programmes can be used right away. The English version of the Manual is in course of being translated. However changing all files into English is a huge task and though it will be undertaken, it will take some considerable time. Whereas a clear explanation of the Italian pull-down menus, notices, cabin information etc will enable the player to get going immediately in this quite fascinating programme.
